MONDAY 14 AUGUST 2006: A NIGHT AT THE OPERA - PUCCINI'S "TURANDOT"

Time: 1930 - 2230hrs
Cost: Premium Reserve tickets: $A220 ("A" Reserve tickets are SOLD OUT)
Dress: Smart casual
Performance: Turandot

A grand opera in lavish style. Princess Turandot is a woman without mercy. She challenges all her suitors to answer three impossible riddles, and punishes failure with death. So when the noble Galaf takes up the challenge he is putting not just his love but also his life on the line.

Bringing this exotic tale of the ice princess to the stage is one of Australia's boldest interpreters, Graeme Murphy. His vision of the Forbidden City of ancient Peking is inspired, a glittering panoply of operatic proportions, full of colour and movement and studded with wry observations which bring the archetypal characters to life.

And then there's the transfermative power of Puccini's music. Liù's moving aria 'Signora, ascolta', Turandot's chilling 'In questa reggia' and the memorable
'Nessun dorma' will melt the hardest heart.

Jennifer Wilson was declared 'a star in the making' when she sang Turandot in America for the first time and received rave reviews for her Brüünhilde with Chicago Lyric Opera. She now makes her Australian debut in the title role. We also weloome back one of the world's leading tenors, Dennis O'Neill, as the heroic Prince Galaf.
