Poster Sessions

All contributed papers will be presented in poster sessions. Posters will be displayed in Hall 6 of the Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre.

There will be eight poster sessions during the week, scheduled each day, morning and afternoon, except Wednesday and Friday afternoons, for 2-3 hours. Specific session times may be found on the Programme page. Each paper will be allocated to one of these sessions. Authors will be advised to which session their poster has been allocated. Posters for morning sessions may be mounted from 8 am on the day, and must be removed by 1.30 pm. Posters for afternoon sessions should be mounted from 2 pm and removed by 6.30 pm. They may not be left in place overnight.

Authors must remain by their posters for the whole of their poster session.

Posters are to be mounted on poster boards, which are three metres high by three metres wide. Posters are to be attached to the centre of the poster boards using Velcro strip, and not by thumb tacks (drawing pins) or adhesive tape. Please limit yourself to one A0-sized poster as the poster boards will be arranged in 3 m square bays like this:

with a poster on each of the three walls of each bay. If delegates are looking at posters which are mounted
too close to the edge of the allocated space they will interfere with delegates looking at adjacent posters.

Suggestions for Preparing Posters

  • Posters should be prepared directly onto A0 sheets - 841 mm by 1189 mm (33.11 inches by 46.81 inches) - or at least onto large (A1 or A2) sheets. Posters made by taping together A4 or quarto sheets tend to look amateurish. They may be designed to be mounted vertically ("portrait") or horizontally ("landscape").

  • The lettering should be large enough to be read by someone standing 2 m back from the poster. The following text sizes are suggested:

    • Title: 100 point, 20-24 mm
    • Authors' names and affiliations: 48 point, 12-15 mm, Title Case
    • Section headings (ABSTRACT, RESULTS, etc.): 48-60 point, 15-20 mm
    • The text itself should be of the order of 16-24 point, 5-10 mm, Upper and lower case

  • For clarity, use lots of diagrams, lots of colour, and not many words.

  • Use phrases and short sentences in "bullet points".

  • It is recommended that the poster be divided into sections:

    • a one or two sentence abstract;
    • problem definition and/or aims;
    • methods;
    • results;
    • conclusions.

  • The rules for the preparation of good slides apply equally to the preparation of good posters:

    • keep them simple
    • avoid overcrowding and excessive information
    • use large lettering and thick lines
    • "one picture is worth a thousand words"

  • The organisers immodestly offer one of their own posters as an example. (It is a big file, and takes some time to load.)
